How to Prevent Fires in the Warehouse Video Transcript
Hello and welcome to Premier Handling Solutions’ video series on running a safer and more efficient warehouse! Today we’re going to cover the importance of fire safety in the warehouse.
Damages from fires and explosions have been a problem since the invention of the warehouse. In the modern day, most of these instances can be prevented with proper care and precaution. Unfortunately, warehouse safety products alone can not solve the problem.
The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics states that in 2007 alone, 3% of workplace fatalities were attributed to fires or explosions. While 3% sounds low, we all can take preventative measures to ensure that that number reaches zero!
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has compiled a list of regulations and standards that must be adhered to throughout the US; however, 25 states have adopted their own set of standards that may deviate in certain areas. Make sure that you are up to date on your own state’s fire safety regulations.
Here are some common standards set forth to protect against fire in your warehouse:
- Automatic sprinkler systems
- 50 ft maximum length on dead end aisles
- No smoking! “No Smoking” signs are also required.
- Automated material handling equipment often have specific requirements that would prevent them from aiding in the spread of a fire.
- Hazardous materials can be very flammable in many instances! Make sure that you follow codes specific to those materials if you house them.
Keep in mind that fire code standards are the absolute minimum requirement for protecting people and things from the dangers of fire and fire-related incidents. There are always ways to go beyond those minimums, including:
- Mandatory fire extinguisher training for all warehouse employees
- Proper trash and waste management
- Having adequate fire evacuation plans
- Open and direct communication with your local fire department
Taking these simple steps can save not only product and material handling equipment but precious lives. With your help, warehouse efficiency AND safety can improve!
