A pallet truck is a useful tool for moving pallet cargo from one location to another. However, pallet trucks can be dangerous if the proper safety regulations are not followed. This list of guidelines will help you maintain safety in the workplace while using pallet trucks.
- Read the operation and safety contents of your pallet truck before use.
- Always inspect the pallet truck before use to see that it is in safe working order.
- Make sure that the pallet you are loading is in good condition. Make sure the load is secure, and will fit through any doorway or entrance you need to access.
- When loading the pallet truck, slide the forks carefully under the pallet, making sure that the wheels of the pallet are not over any part of the pallet. Failure to do this will cause severe damage to the pallet when trying to raise the load.
- Pull the pallet truck instead of pushing whenever possible. This will give you more control over the load.
- When pulling loads, be aware of any obstructions behind you.
- When using a pallet truck on wet floor, or on an incline, have another person assist you to avoid any accidents.
- Always release the pallet truck anytime the truck is left unattended while loaded.
- Keep feet and other body parts from underneath a pallet when the jack is in a raised position. Safety foot gear is recommended.
- Never exceed the load capacity of a pallet truck, and make sure the load is spread evenly over the width and length of the pallet.
- Since most pallet trucks do not have brakes, always keep the pallet truck at a reasonable speed and do not try to move a load heavier than the operator is capable of controlling.
- Pallet trucks should be inspected and tuned at least every six months.
- Pallet Jacks are for work only. Never ride or play with the jacks (
while your boss is looking).
